Certifications Needed for IT Sales?

By June 29, 2011

Computer Keyboard There are many sales careers that need special education or certifications and many that do not. For example, a sales job in the pool industry probably won't require any particular level of type of education while selling nuclear reactor cooling cores (if there is such a sales field,) would probably require some specific education.

Those interested in a career in the IT industry, the question comes down to this; "Are certifications needed or is an IT based education just as good?"

While different companies will have their own requirements, most IT sales companies will require some, or many, IT certifications. The needed certifications range depending on what you will be selling and, more importantly, to whom you will be selling to.

While this list is certainly not meant to be a complete list, here are some common IT based certifications that those interested in starting or advancing their IT selling careers should at least consider adding to their business cards.

MCITP-Microsoft Certified IT Professional.

CSSA-Certified SonicWall Security Administrator

CCNP-Cisco Certified Network Professional

ITIL (Foundations)

CompTia Certifications-A+, Network+ and Security+

While not all IT sales jobs will require these certifications, having some letters after your name can certainly help you land a job and probably will get you a higher salary than your "letter-less" competition.
